The Garden Gallery's Summer Exhibition 2008 will include a special focus on Glass for the Garden. New work by regular gallery artists will also be on show. Those exhibiting at The Garden Gallery for the first time this year include Penelope Batley with her very distinctive and original garden vessels, Martin Cook with his individually designed tables and benches in stone and wood, exquisitely inscribed with verse, and Nicola Henshaw, whose sculpture and furniture, carved from European hardwoods, is inspired by myths and fables. Johannes von Stumm's sculpture challenges conventional thinking as it combines tough materials - bronze, stone and glass - to achieve a sense of strength, poise and harmony. Peter Eugene Ball is also new to the gallery - the apparent simplicity of his serene sculptures belies the richness of their inspiration by ancient and medieval art.

Glass sculpture in the garden has much to recommend it. It reflects the light and nearby plants and trees, harmonises with water and sparkles on sunny, frosty mornings. Glass is a robust medium which withstands harsh weather conditions and is easy to maintain, just needing an occasional wash. Glass for the Garden includes work by Sally Fawkes, Richard Jackson, Peter Newsome ARBS, Tracey Sheppard FGE and Johannes von Stumm FRBS.

The Summer Exhibition runs from Saturday 10 May (Private View 11 - 5) until Saturday 26 July on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 - 5. The gallery is open by arrangement at all other times.

The Garden Gallery has published a book of beautiful black and white photographs of sculpture and other artworks, taken in the garden by John Garfield, photographer and retired neurosurgeon. Some forty artists are represented in the book which will raise awareness of how successfully art can harmonise with gardens, each helping to enhance the other. All profits from the book will be used to commission Tracey Sheppard FGE to engrave two glass windows for a new development at Naomi House, the children's hospice near Winchester. Naomi House provides palliative care, including respite, terminal and bereavement care and support for children with life limiting conditions and their families from central southern England. If you would like to buy a copy of the book (£10 + £5 p & p) please contact The Garden Gallery.
